Unity is the Paris one, from 2014, the one with Arno on the rooftops and the co-op mode that nobody remembers. I have owned it for years and never played it, which is the normal fate of games I buy on sale and file under “someday”. This week I decided someday was yesterday.

Getting Crimson Desert to Run on Omarchy Quattro, Part 2

Author’s note: this is the second half of a story. The first part ends at 01:59 with the game finally running and me looking at it for one minute before turning the machine off. This one is about what happened when I actually tried to play it.

The next window came sooner than I expected: a whole Saturday. For a recent father that is a small miracle and I will not explain how it happened, only that I intended to use every minute of it on Crimson Desert, which after last night’s surgery was finally launching.

Getting Crimson Desert to Run on Omarchy Quattro

I am a recent father. If you are one too, you already know what that means for gaming: it means nothing. There is no gaming. There is a baby, there is work, there is the crib, and there is a version of you from two years ago who had opinions about frame pacing.

But every once in a while there is a window. The baby is asleep by midnight, the house is quiet, and between 00:00 and 02:00 there are two hours that belong to nobody. Last night I decided, exceptionally, to spend them playing Crimson Desert, which had just finished downloading its 117 GB onto my Steam library.

Getting Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete to Run on Omarchy Quattro

Heroes of Might and Magic III is one of those games I keep going back to. It is from 1999, it is turn-based, the graphics are hand-drawn 2D, and it is still better than most strategy games released since. Twenty-seven years later nobody has replaced it, and honestly, I have stopped waiting for anyone to try.

The GOG version, Heroes of Might and Magic III: Complete, bundles the base game with both expansions and is supposed to be the easy way to play it today. On Windows, it mostly is. On Linux, running through Heroic Games Launcher with GE-Proton, it very much was not.
